Plumbing Emergency: What To Do During a Flood

Welcome! My name is Sally. This is my blog about plumbing. I decided to start writing about plumbing after a very scary experience. I arrived home from work one day only to discover that a pipe burst in my home. When I opened the front door, I saw a torrent of water pouring down the stairs. I panicked and ran next door to my neighbour. Luckily, he used to work as a construction contractor, so he has a lot of experience in dealing with household problems. He helped me to turn off the mains water and helped me to mop up the mess. After this event, I decided I wanted to learn more about the plumbing in my house, so I went to a night school class.

Plumbing Jobs That No Homeowner Should Ever Try on Their Own

by Melvin Owens

Many homeowners today are getting more and more ambitious when it comes to handling their own home repairs, as they can follow videos online for the instructions they need and rent specialty tools from local hardware stores. However, this doesn't mean that a homeowner should try to tackle every single plumbing installation or repair job, as there are some jobs that require more expertise than you'll get just by watching a simple video.

Before you tackle any of the following jobs, consider calling for professional plumbing services instead:

1. Installing sewer lines outside your home

Sewer lines outside your home may get cracked or broken due to tree roots wrapping themselves around those pipes, but replacing them is not as easy as you might assume. Trenches need to be dug and braced during the work, and a poor-quality job can mean damaging your lawn as well as installing the wrong types of pipes.

Sewer pipes can also be located near gas lines, buried phone lines and other cables, or even electrical lines. Cutting into these can be expensive to fix, not to mention dangerous and even downright deadly.

2. When replacing large sections of pipes in your home

If one small pipe in your home has burst or sprung a leak, you may be able to replace it with the same exact material and length, if you can find it at the hardware store. However, if you need to replace large sections of pipe in your home, this can involve cutting and welding pipes together. This is a job that is best left to professionals, as a poor weld can mean leaks.

Cutting pipes is also typically done with a welder, but if you're not sure of how to do this, you can actually soften the metal and in turn, leaks can form. The wrong measurements can also mean poorly fitted pipes. Because of all these risks, you want to call for plumbing services when you need to replace major sections of pipe in your home.

3. Plumbing with a gas line

Repairs to a hot water heater with a gas line is always best left to a professional, even if you assume you won't be touching the gas line itself. Repairs can make these lines come loose and in turn, your home could suffer a gas leak. Not only is this costly as your home will need to bring in more gas to compensate and heat the water in the tank, but it can also be very dangerous.
